Milk crate race is an awesome game that we came across through a youth ministry up on the Gold Coast. This game is low cost, can be hyped up and be used with small or large groups of people. It also acts as a great game for high school programs.
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
- Milk crates (minimum 2 per person for as many people as you want)
- Cord/rope
- Helmets
- Protective gear
- Masking tape
WHAT TO DO?
This game is a race. The aim is for your competitors to get from the start to finish, as quickly as possible (masking tape to mark out start and finish). The way that your contestants get to the end is by running on crates, or essentially giant platform crate shoes.
Rope/cord is tied from one side of the crate to the other (refer to picture), providing contestants with something to hold and apply pressure with. This ensures the crate stays on the bottom of the contestants foot and allows them to walk/run steadily. Make sure they are wearing helmets and protective gear at all times, with necessary precautions being taken.
HOW TO CHANGE IT UP A BIT
There can be so many variations to this game, and this can be easily tweaked to suit your youth group or school program. Some suggestions include:
- Splitting the teens into teams to cheer on and support the contestants
- Creating a relay
- Creating a congo line
- Putting in obstacles
- etc
We would love to hear your stories – send us your pictures! And remember to always stay safe (read up on our risk assessments).
